Silicon Chip September 2016

Silicon Chip - September 2016

In the September edition of Silicon Chip Magazine, build the Micromite Plus Explore 100. This unit offers more power and more I/O points, than the Explore 64 described last month. The unit is based on the Microchip PIC32MX470 microcontroller with an in-built BASIC interpreter. The board offers 37 general purpose I/O points, with 17 of these available as analog inputs. Also included on the board is two slots for the mikroBUS Click Expansion Boards, a USB 2.0 serial interface, Real Time Clock board socket, PS/2 Keyboard Socket and the board connects directly to a 5-inch touchscreen Colour LCD display for brilliant graphics. The unit is ideal for use as a real-time controller or as an embedded controller in a kiosk or equipment control board.

Also this month, build a Mains Timer for pumps or compressors, as well as general appliances. This unit is available in two versions, the first version can be used as a cyclic timer for monitoring a running pump, the unit will monitor the time of operation and switch the unit off, if the operation time is exceeded. Ideal for use with a water pump, to avoid draining the water source in the event of a burst pipe. The second version is a basic period timer and will run an appliance for a set time and then switch the appliance off, after the time has expired. Finally, this month a 4-Input Automotive Fault Detector that can monitor 4-input signals from your car automotive system. The unit will monitor all 4 signals simultaneously and will latch an output LED for the first fault that appears during testing, identifying the initial source of the problem. All projects come complete with circuit diagram and electronic parts list.

In this month’s features, a look at LUCAS, a mechanical device which administers CPR to a person in sudden cardiac arrest, continuously. The unit can administer the CPR more accurately for longer periods or time, with a higher success rate. Also in this month’s features, a look at military robots from the beginning, up to what is available now.
