Silicon Chip July 2016
The July Issue of Silicon Chip Magazine is still available. In this month’s issue, build a Universal Temperature Alarm. This compact alarm unit can monitor temperatures from -33°C to +125°C and can be used to monitor your fish tank, home brew, freezer unit, fridge or hot water system. The unit features a wide range of alarm options, including over termperature, under temperature or when the temperature moves outside a specified range. The unit is easy to build and uses only through-hole components, together with easy mounting in a small plastic project box, making the unit suitable for mounting in harsh conditions.
Also this month, build the Brownout Protector for induction motors. A brownout (i.e. low voltage condition) can cause an induction motor to burn out, as the voltage is not sufficient for starting. This unit will protect a single phase 230Vac induction motor up to 2,300W. The unit features an adjustable voltage threshold, switch-on delay and an indication of normal power and brownout conditions. Finally, this month a Touchscreen Super Clock that can show the time in either an Analog or Digital format. This attractive looking unit can display the time in up to 20 different locations with GPS accuracy and adjustment for daylight saving times. All projects come complete with circuit diagram and electronic parts list.
In this month’s features, a look at how Directional Drilling works. Horizontal drilling is expected to release vast amounts of oil and gas, by tapping a large seam of oil and gas. This article looks at how it's done and some of the equipment used.
