Silicon Chip December 2010

The December Issue of Silicon Chip Electronics Magazine has plenty of exciting, state of the art projects. This month’s projects include a hot-wire cutter for cutting polystyrene and polyurethane materials. A hot wire cutter allows you to cut these precisely with a fine sharp cut and is ideal for working on models, hobbies and furniture work. Also this month a Universal USB Data Logger, which will measure and store data on a removable memory card. The board incorporates a real-time clock for date stamping the readings, as well as a computer connection for downloading the data. Up to six digital sensor inputs are available with four analog inputs too. The unit has a separate power supply and features a low power design, enabling the unit to be mounted remotely for taking readings and then downloading them at a later date. This month also has the third part of the DAB project, with explanations of the software, as well the third part of the Digital Lighting Controller project. All projects come complete with circuit diagram and electronic parts list.

This month’s articles include an excellent article on soldering SMD components, a lot of ICs are now only available in SMD parts, this guide will help you soldering and mounting these parts on your board. Together with a look at desoldering and removing SMD parts as well. Also this month, how to convert your cordless drill to a 12V battery connector, so it can be used with a car cigarette lighter connection or SLA battery.
