Silicon Chip April 2015

Silicon Chip - April 2015

The April Issue of Silicon Chip Magazine is still available, in this months issue build an Appliance Insulation Tester. This tester is ideal for checking the safety of your appliances and hand tools. The unit measures the insulation resistance of your appliance from 707kohm to 16Mohm and displays it on an easy to read led bargraph. The unit includes many additional features, such as selectable test voltages, over-current trip for safety, low battery indication and high voltage fault indicator. The unit is ideal for testing power tools and soldering irons, which should be checked regularly for damage to the power leads.

Also this month, build a Really Bright 12/24V LED Oyster Light, These are ideal for use with solar powered remote supplies and will provide light for a large area, such as a boat, caravan etc. Finally this month, build a Low Frequency Distortion Analyser, this unit can measure the distortion on a 3-20Vac sinwave signal in the range of 20Hz to 10kHz. The unit can also specifically test for 2nd, 3rd, Even and Odd Harmonics on the waveform. All projects come complete with circuit diagram and electronic parts list.

In this month’s articles, a look at Airborne Weather Radar, this article looks at some of the new technology being introduced and also explains the various terminology used, plus the theory behind the concepts. Also this month a review of the National Instruments, VirtualBench 5-in-1, this powerful testing tool provides an array of functions, including oscilloscope, logic analyser, waveform generator, power supply and multimeter in a single unit. The unit also interfaces with a PC or an iPad to provide easy control and recording of data.
