Silicon Chip July 2009

In the July issue of Silicon Chip Electronics Magazine, an excellent article on Water Desalination and how it works. Plus a look at the new water desalination plants being built in Australia. Plus this month we compare two low cost video recorders, is there a difference? The results are quite surprising. Finally a look at the annual CeBIT show, the annual IT show in Australia, with a wealth of new products and local inventions.

This month’s projects include the a new Lead-Acid Battery Zapper and Desulphator, this remarkable unit will rejunenate old lead acid batteries by pulsing a high-voltage waveform to dissolve the lead-sulphate crystals on the plates. This unit is easy to build and economically priced. The unit works with 6V, 12V and 24V batteries. Secondly this month, a compact easy to use hand-held Metal Locator, this unit is ideal for the handyman to locate steel frames, studs, nails etc in plaster walls. The unit is fitted with adjustable sensitivity and is also able to discriminate between ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Finally this month, a multi-function active filter module. This unit is ideal for use in active crossovers in loudspeaker systems, as well as a low-pass filter for driving sub-woofer amplifiers. The unit can also be set as a high-pass or bandpass filter. The unit can be built cheaply and will work with larger amplifiers.
