Silicon Chip August 2009

The August Issue of Silicon Chip Electronics Magazine, with a wealth of interesting articles and projects, this magazine is ideal for the electronics enthusiast. This month’s articles, include a look at locating ships using a VHF reveiver as well as plotting their course using available software. This in-depth article is a great introduction into the Automatic Identification System (AIS) used on ships and the information it provides. Also this month, it is the official start of Digital Radio in Australia, we have a look at the different transmission systems and broadcast category licences.

This month’s projects include a follow on to the article on identify local ships, with a easy to do modification to a Uniden scanner to receive the 160MHz AIS transmissions. Also this month, a SD Card Music Player & Recorder. This easy to build unit, allows playback of wav files stored on SD Cards. The unit can also be used as a recorder to store sound bites on a SD card. For the Solar, Wind system or for just checking your car battery, a new Lead-Acid Battery Checker Project. This compact unit, can check both standard Lead-Acid Batteries as well as the Sealed Lead Acid batteries (SLA) used in many back-up applications. The unit is suitable for 6V, 12V and 24V batties, and gives a visual indication if the battery is is good or poor condition. Finally, this month a deluxe 3-Channel UHF Remote Control, with a high degree of security. The unit can be used to switch 3 separate devices, such as lights, doors etc. This unit is loaded with features and is ideal for use in the home. All projects come complete with circuit diagram and electronic parts list.
