Maxim's new RS485 Receiver with Fault Detection
Maxim has release a new RS485 receiver that can detect a number of faults on the RS485 communication lines.
Maxim Integrated Products introduces the MAX3097E/MAX3098E triple RS-422/RS-485 receivers with fault detection targeted for motor control applications. These devices feature an independent alarm output for each receiver to alert the system of fault conditions at the receivers' inputs. The alarm output is asserted if the receiver inputs are shorted, open, out of the common-mode range, or have a low differential voltage. The differential fault threshold for the MAX3097E is ±275mV, and the MAX3098E has two differential threshold versions available. The threshold for the 'A' grade is ±120mV, while the 'B'-grade threshold is ±70mV. Along with the individual alarm outputs, these devices feature a capacitor-programmable, delayed-alarm output to ensure error-free fault detection even at slow transition rates.
The MAX3097E/MAX3098E operate from a single +3.0V to +5.5V supply, and are guaranteed to transfer data up to 16Mbps. The receiver inputs are ESD-protected up to ±15kV using IEC1000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge, ±8kV using IEC1000-4-2 Contact Discharge, and ±15kV using the Human Body Model, ensuring compliance with strict international ESD requirements.
