Atmel AT90S Microcontroller with USB Interface

New microcontroller is ideal for Smart Cards

Atmel Corporation has announced that it is sampling the AT90SC6464C-USB, the latest in its market-leading AT90SC family of AVR-based secure Flash microcontrollers for Smart Cards. Its full-speed USB interface (12M bps) gives it a direct high-speed connection to any PC or Internet appliance, making it ideal for a wide range of secure e-commerce applications. These include electronic signature, user authentification, transfers of large amounts of secure data, high-security financial transactions and access keys for secure software.

Hervé Roche, Atmel's Marketing Manager for Internet Transaction ICs, commented, "USB is a likely standard for next-generation Smart Card ICs. It gives us a Smart Card with a low-cost plug-and-play interface to any PC or Internet appliance. The AT90SC6464C-USB has a dual-USB/ISO 7816 external interface that is automatically configured on insertion into a reader. In this way it remains compatible with the established ISO 7816 infrastructure, while opening up all the possibilities of USB interfacing. Transaction times are kept to a minimum thanks to the high data transfer rate over the full-speed USB."

Gemplus, the world leader in Smart Card systems, is one of the first customers for the AT90SC6464C-USB. They endorsed the product with the comment from Michel Leduc, Director, Marketing Strategic, "We at Gemplus strongly believe in USB Smart Cards. USB is the perfect protocol for Smart Cards to be integrated in the computer world. Beyond compatibility with the PC standard, USB full-speed communication constitutes a real revolution that will allow new applications to emerge".

The AT90SC6464C-USB is built around Atmel's innovative AVR 8-bit RISC processor, with 64K bytes of on- chip Flash memory, and 64K bytes of EEPROM. Flash program memory gives unrivalled flexibility for new applications, with the ability to load or upgrade code during the production run with no delay at all. The large EEPROM data memory enables the device to store enough secure data for complex transactions. The AT90SC6464C-USB includes all the security features already built into the AT90SC series, in particular a crypto co-processor for efficient execution of highest-level encryption algorithms.
